The job description for a 911 dispatcher may differ slightly based on the position:

911 dispatchers must respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance and information.
They must provide dispatch and communication support services for police, fire, emergency, and related services.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direction from the Dispatcher Supervisor, Jail Superintendent, or Chief of Police.
Essential Functions:
Operate a multi-line telephone console system, alerting system, and TDD system for the deaf and hearing-impaired.
Translate information to the appropriate codes.
Determine and assign the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a computer-aided dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes.
Perform emergency medical dispatch and crisis intervention services.
Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency medical calls.
Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment.
Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints.
Ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller's situation as to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services, or refer callers to other agencies.
Dispatch and coordinate the responses of public safety agencies.
Identify appropriate number and type of equipment or apparatus to dispatch.
Enters and modifies information into local, state, and national computer databases.
Monitor and respond to a variety of technical systems and alarms.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS 1.
Must attend and successfully complete all assigned 911 Dispatch training.
Knowledge of:
1.
Safety and Security:
Candidates must have knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures, including safety procedures, such as CPR and first aid.
Policies and procedures may refer to department policies and procedures related to emergency communications and disaster and special response plans.

Customer Service:
Candidates must have knowledge of providing excellent customer service.
3.
Telecommunications:
Candidates must have knowledge of telecommunications systems, which may include transmission, broadcasting, and switching systems, and computerized databases, including teletype operations and procedures.
Further, they must understand basic dispatch codes, as well as standard abbreviations and industry terminology commonly used by emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies.

Geography:
Candidates must understand jurisdictional boundaries, as well as thoroughfares, landmarks, public buildings, and waterways within the jurisdiction.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a smoke-free, vape-free environment located in the 911 dispatch center which is located inside the Kotzebue Regional Jail.
Work involves intense concentration on activities going on around one's location on a constant basis throughout the entire work shift.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to sit for long periods of time, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, bend, stoop, squat, twist, lift, and climb, reach with hands and arms; use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and fax machines; may require ability to use special equipment including but not limited to satellite phones, and two-way radios.
MINIMUM
Qualifications Education:
Graduation from high school, or GED equivalent.
Experience:
No experience required; however prior 911 Dispatch experience is preferable.
Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid State driver's license.
Ability to meet employment and qualification requirements for a 911 Dispatcher to include obtaining a State of Alaska Department of Public Safety security clearance to access Criminal Justice Information Data Systems and Networks.
