The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill up to two temporary positions at Western Artic National Parklands, AK. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. Anticipated EOD: May 2014

Kotzebue, population of approximately 3,500, is one of the largest Eskimo villages in
alaska
. Off the road system and accessible only by air there are daily scheduled flights to Anchorage with regional service to towns and villages. Three grocery stores, a hotel, three restaurants, cable TV, Internet, and cellular phone service are available. Lying 30 miles north of the Arctic Circle the region has a tundra climate. Summers are cool with average temperatures in the low 50's; winter temperatures vary between 10 degrees above and 40 degrees below zero. Area rivers begin freezing in October with break-up occurring in late May or early June.
Private market housing is limited. Most housing is considered sub-standard compared to more urban areas but is typical of bush communities. Government housing is available at this time. Most personal needs are available and expensive. Major purchases are made in Anchorage or other cities and air-freighted or barged in during the summer months.
